Week Three

Whoo! The webliography was the hardest thing I have ever done! I had to call Jennifer about a million times. She was a big help. But, as you can tell my webliography is still messed up. I don't know why part of it turned out the way I wanted it to and the other parts did not. Everybody else's looks really great! But mine is really rough.
On a lighter note, the other assignments do not look nearly as difficult. I have discovered that if I follow the instructions some of the technical assignments are pretty easy. Except for the webliography, all the other assignements from week two were fairly easy.
All those questions!! I had to think alot! But, answering those questions gave me some ideas on how to enhance my learning. I did not have the answers to the questions off of the top of my head, I had to talk myself through them. Does anybody do this?
I have a confession to make. I am a procrastinator!!. I noticed in the first week some people struggled with disiplining themselves into sitting down and working. I'm still struggling with this.
I don't know how many times a day I sit down to start working and I get interrupted. With two babies I get interupted alot. After so many interupptions, I just give up. I never intend to wait until the last minute, but it seems no matter what I do it still works out this way. Any suggestions?

Fun Stuff
For fun my husband and I love to ride motorcycles . After the house is remodeled we want to build our own harley

Personal Interests
As a Sunday school teacher, I like to get my supplies from
ministries that have been around for more then 20 years.
I read christian magazines . I try to find out of print bibles .
Research
When I'm doing research I use a lot of different sites. When researching about hearing I visit this site. I also visit the following site for researching.
Disipline
To keep up on what is going on in speech pathology I visit this site. The following site I found through asha . To look up disorders I visit this site.

I would like to introduce myself and give a brief introduction to my research topic.
My name is Melissa Cade, I am a mother, wife and a student. I am studying to be a speech language pathologist. I want to help people, so I chose this field. I am currently researching Down Syndrome. This disability occurs in every 1 of 800 births, so I guess you could say it is a common occurrence.
I’m trying to find out if children with Down Syndrome are aware of their disability and if language could be used to give them a better understanding of the world around them.
Let me briefly introduce you Down Syndrome:
The cause of Down Syndrome is an error in the division of cells. People with Down Syndrome have an extra part to their 21st chromosome. This error in cell division causes mild-moderate mental retardation.
There is still no known cause for the reason of this cell error.
Listed are some medical conditions associated with Down Syndrome:
Hypothyroidism, hearing loss, congenital heart disease, high blood pressure in the lungs, vision disorders and seizure disorders. These disorders vary from child to child.
Early Intervention and education is available to children with Down Syndrome. These services are provided by: special educators, speech therapist, occupational therapists and social workers.
For more information please check out the web site www.ds-health.com/down syndrome.htm. There are many links to different sites at this site.

Learning Futures

This is a tough question. I don’t know the answer for sure; I just know what I think. So I will talk myself through this.
How can I continue to forge my professional and academic development? The only way I know to do this is to continue my education, not just to graduate school, but possibly further on. I believe the new knowledge and application skills I gain in school will always directly impact my professional development. Even once I am finished with school, I will never really be finished with school. I will attend continuing education courses whether required or not. I think these courses will keep me up to date on new developments in therapy.
I think that I also need to “shadow” a speech pathologist in several different professional settings, if this is possible. I think this will show me what really goes on, the reality of therapy. I also think I need to volunteer somewhere that I could work with impaired children. I believe this would help me become more comfortable working with people.
How might I inquire into my learning in an ongoing manner?
The answer to this I believe is to read read and read some more. Read educational and informative books, besides my textbooks. Now that I’ve been introduced to mailing lists I think it would be useful to subscribe to some concerning speech pathology and the disorders we will be dealing with. Maybe even check into receiving newsletters from surrounding schools and hospitals to keep up with new developments in these two settings.
How might my professional and academic development be informed by my ongoing research?
Well, I believe my ongoing research will lead me to discover new developments in the treatments of disorders and diseases we are involved with. For example, there could be advances in the medical treatment of Alzheimer’s that could change when speech therapy would begin and it could change the level of aggression of the therapy. This of course would affect me professionally.
Academically I believe ongoing research would supplement everything I learn in school and it may also clear up any confusion I have about new material being learned. Research may also lead me to new areas of interest.
How do I respond to opportunities for inquiry?
Anytime I come across something I do not understand or that is new to me, I search for more information until I have a better understanding and know more about it.
How do I meet my own learning needs?
This is very hard to answer. I learn best when information is very clear. So, I ask a lot of questions and I do a lot of reading and re-reading. If I become confused because of an answer given to a question I try to find the answer on my own. If something I have read confuses me, I read it again or ask questions.
