Journal of Week 7

Trouble, trouble and more trouble! I couldn't connect to the internet on my computer today. Everything was fine yesterday. The last time this happened my ISP hand changed the settings on the connect box and I didn't find out until I tried to connect and couldn't. When I called they told me how to change the settings, but it happened on a weekday. They are closed on Sundays.
My son has been sick all week. Teething and a nasty virus. Vomiting, lots of dirty diapers, doctor visits, fussy and attached to my hip.
Well enough of that. I changed my prospectus. I decided to change the letter to the politician to a pamphlet on down syndrome. I thought this would tie things together better and I needed something to tell about down syndrome. Once again the peer reviewing helped me. I had not thought of doing a pamphlet until I saw Summer's. Hers looked so good I wanted to try it.
Well, my power point is quite rough. I'm trying to get across that with help kids with down syndrome can lead a normal life and they have the same wants and fears of kids without down syndrome. I decided to make my power point all about the kids, they deserve it. In the title I did the word liveing in all caps because that is the important part. These kids may have down syndrome but they still want live and are doing the best they can. They have down syndrome, down syndrome doesn't have them.
I don't think I'll have any trouble getting my webliograpy revised, but the poem is giving me fits. I'm lacking the creativity, I think.
I'm at my uncles right now, but will have to leave soon. I don't know if I'll be able to get back to the internet again. I hope I can.

What is Down Syndrome?

Down Syndrome is a condition where a child is born with an extra #21 chromosome. Instead of having 46 chromosomes, these children have 47.

The Cause? Abnormal cell division, but the cause of the abnormal cell division is still largely unknown. But here are some theroies:

1. hormonal abnormalities
2. X-rays
3. viral infectins
4. immunologic problems
5. genetic predisposition

Physical Characteristics of children with Down Syndrome:

1. flattening of the back of the head
2. slanting of the eyelids
3. small skin folds at the inner corner of the eyes
4. depressed nasal bridge
5. slightly smaller ears
6. small mouth
7. decreased muscle tone
8. loose legaments
9. small hands and feet
10.one line across the palm
11.a gap between the fist and second toes
* Note all these characteristics vary from child to child

Mental Characteristics:

The mental capabilities also vary from child to child.
Mild to moderate retardation
No retardation; function at borderline or low average range
Severe retardation
Language Delays

Tips for Family Members of Children with Down Syndrome:

Every child can learn.
Accept the child.
Involve the child.
Include the child.
Stimulate the child.
Engage the child in exercises to improve fine and gross motor skills.
Instruct the child in cognitive development.
Enroll the child in Early Intervention Programs
