Genre 4 Pamphlet about Down Syndrome

What is Down Syndrome?

Down Syndrome is a condition where a child is born with an extra #21 chromosome. Instead of having 46 chromosomes, these children have 47.

The Cause? Abnormal cell division, but the cause of the abnormal cell division is still largely unknown. But here are some theroies:

1. hormonal abnormalities
2. X-rays
3. viral infectins
4. immunologic problems
5. genetic predisposition

Physical Characteristics of children with Down Syndrome:

1. flattening of the back of the head
2. slanting of the eyelids
3. small skin folds at the inner corner of the eyes
4. depressed nasal bridge
5. slightly smaller ears
6. small mouth
7. decreased muscle tone
8. loose legaments
9. small hands and feet
10.one line across the palm
11.a gap between the fist and second toes
* Note all these characteristics vary from child to child

Mental Characteristics:

The mental capabilities also vary from child to child.
Mild to moderate retardation
No retardation; function at borderline or low average range
Severe retardation
Language Delays

Tips for Family Members of Children with Down Syndrome:

Every child can learn.
Accept the child.
Involve the child.
Include the child.
Stimulate the child.
Engage the child in exercises to improve fine and gross motor skills.
Instruct the child in cognitive development.
Enroll the child in Early Intervention Programs
